Definitely the red bellied woodpeckers for me.  I never knew they truly had a red belly until I captured a photo of one in just the right pose with just the right light. Low and behold there was that red belly!

I greatly enjoy the MDC's Conservationist magazine and also their kids version, Xplor.  I am always fascinated by learning something new in the Xplor (Great magazine!).  The May/June issue stated "E. Kingbirds are named for the "crown" of orange or golden feathers on top of their heads".  Duh...I never really thought about it.  Since their family is Tyrannidae (tyrants) and they are such aggressive little birds … often taking on Red-tailed Hawks that fly over their territory... I figured that was a probable reason for their name?   Kingsnakes eat other snakes...

So, it stirred my curiosity.  What other bird names have I learned and never reflected or knew the source or meaning of their name?  Not the obvious names such as a Red-bellied Woodpecker.  Are there any other names of birds that have a somewhat obscure or hidden meaning?  Are there any "Duh" moments with bird names that any of you have had?

Forgive my musings on a super windy and rainy day!!
