Documentary Theater in Today’s German-speaking World 

In the German-speaking world, documentary theater – generally understood as theatre that uses pre-existing documentary material (such as newspaper articles, government reports, interviews, journals, and correspondences) as material for plays about real events and people, frequently without altering the text in performance - has experienced a renaissance over the last two decades.

This panel seeks to explore the playwrights, topics, venues, aesthetic approaches, and reception of documentary theater in Germany, Austria, and Switzerland today. 

Names that come to mind are the collective Rimini Protokoll, and authors such as Maxi Obexer, Christine Umpfenbach, Gesine Schmidt, Hans-Werner Kroesinger, and Milo Rau.

Questions could include but are not limited to:

·       Which new voices are coming to the fore?

·       Which political and societal issues are being addressed?

·       What is the role of intermediality in productions of documentary theater? (Quite frequently, these plays start out as radio plays or are also available in radio/podcast format)

·       Which creative and aesthetic approaches are being foregrounded?
