Call for Papers German Studies Association, 43rd Annual Conference October 3-6, 2019, Portland, OR German Studies and Service/Experiential Learning in the US Eyler and Giles define service learning “a form of experiential education where learning occurs through a cycle of action and reflection as students work with others through a process of applying what they are learning to community problems, and at the same time, reflecting upon their experience as they seek to achieve real objectives for the community and deeper understanding for themselves” (1999). Indeed, this pedagogical approach can be a rewarding experience for instructors, students, and community partners alike. Moreover, with the job market and companies seeking career-ready college graduates, universities are increasingly focusing on and demanding the development and implementation of service/experiential learning courses into the various disciplines, including German studies, language, literature, and history. And although the 5 Cs of the ACTFL world-readiness standards for language learning naturally lend themselves to service/experiential learning courses, the implementation of such courses in a German Studies and/or German Language and Literature curriculum in a non-German setting provides certain challenges. This panel seeks to address and discuss the challenges and rewards of including service/experiential learning in German studies, language, literature, and history courses. Invited are contributions that address one or more of the following topics: - development of a service/experiential learning course in German studies, language, literature, and history - implementation and integration of service/experiential learning into an existing course and/or curriculum - establishing and maintaining a community partnership - evaluation/assessment of service/experiential learning components - problems and solutions in service/experiential learning courses Contributions of already established and successful service/experiential learning courses and community partnerships that go beyond German language tutoring and teaching in a pre-K through high school setting are especially welcome.
