A youth Birdathon organized by MO Master Naturalists from Osage Trails chapter with help from Burroughs Audubon was held at Burr Oak Woods CA this morning. We spotted a few new arrivals: Broad-wing Hawk, Scissor-tailed Flycatcher, Blue-gray Gnatcatchers and a very handsome male Ruby-throated Hummingbird. Other birds that the kids enjoyed included Eastern Phoebes, Cooper’s Hawk, Ruby-crowned Kinglets, Yellow-rumped Warblers and Lincoln’s Sparrows. There were still at least 5 Purple Finches- 3 males and 2 females- at the feeders. A good time was had by kids, parents and mentors. All kids received a bird guide to home with them, from plastic foldout for the youngest birders to Sibley’s Eastern Field Guide for the oldest. This was the 3rd year for the Birdathon.
