Jo Ann,
Margarine, oils and other polyunsaturated fats are not useful for birds to eat, they do better with saturated fats like suet and lard. The soft polyunsaturated fats will get on their feathers and not be good for their waterproofing and insulation.

A rather miserly question, but would Imperial margarine, way past expiration date, be harmful to birds in making suet? I would mix it with equal amount of lard and other ingredients. Right now the only birds that descend on my upside down suet feeder are House Sparrows and they have no problem hanging upside down. I have mean thoughts about HOSP domination of my yard; however, I don't want to stir up a batch of poison intentionally. We humans eat margarine, but we humans eat honey also and honey is bad for hummingbirds, so does anyone have any similar facts regarding margarine mixed with lard in suet? Thanks for advice.
