Many faculty express dissatisfaction with commercial textbooks for second-year college German: they are expensive, difficult to tailor to diverse groups of learners, and offer few opportunities for extensive reading or project-based learning. This session invites proposals from faculty who have gone textbook-free and created literacy-oriented thematic units for second-year college German courses (on themes such as "Heimat," "Sustainability," or "War and Peace"). Ideally, such units integrate authentic materials, grammar instruction, all three communicative modes, and innovative assessments.
