Castlewood State Park, St. Louis County

Braving a starting temperature of 33 degrees, twenty-five hardy birders were rewarded with good looks at Northern Parula, Louisiana Waterthrush, and numerous Yellow-throated Warblers. Other species of note were Brown Creeper, Yellow-bellied Sapsucker, Ruby-crowned and Golden-crowned Kinglet, Blue-gray Gnatcatcher, a heard Winter Wren, Field, Chipping, Swamp and Song Sparrows, Northern Rough-winged and Barn Swallows, Brown Thrasher, Fish Crow and good views of the Great Blue Heron rookery along the Meramec River across from the boat ramp. Raptors included Red-tailed, Red-shouldered and Broad-winged Hawks. Those staying til the very end were treated with nice looks at an adult and juvenile Bald Eagle over the parking lot.

Pat Lueders will have a full list on eBird.

Thanks to a great group for a very pleasant (but chilly!) spring morning.

For the St.Louis Audubon Society,
Sue Gustafson and Pat Lueders
