Goethe at Play:

Theories, Narratives, and Practices of Play in the Goethezeit

Play recurs throughout the literature of the Goethezeit, from Kant’s and Schiller’s aesthetics, to collections and depictions of parlor games, to Philanthropist and Romantic pedagogies, to novelistic, autobiographical, and fairytale explorations of children’s play by Goethe himself as well as by authors such as Moritz, Tieck, and Hoffmann.  The ludic discourse around 1800 helped form the basis for influential theories of play around 1900 and beyond, including those of Groos, Benjamin, Huizinga, Freud, Piaget, Vygotsky, Gadamer, and Callois.  Proposals are invited for papers that investigate any aspect of the theory, narration, and practice of play in the Goethezeit.  Especially welcome are proposals that address the relevance for contemporary approaches to play.  Please send abstracts (no more than 500 words) and a brief vita to Edgar Landgraf ([log in to unmask]) and Elliott Schreiber ([log in to unmask]) by February 1, 2016.
