Developing Multiple Literacies through Theater in the Undergraduate German Curriculum

Theater has always provided rich possibilities for language acquisition, as well as [inter]cultural competence. Theater as cultural representation and as experimental “play” can encourage students to interpret and create texts in ways which reflect an awareness of their cultural/historical contexts, and the particular ways of thinking and valuing that inform them. Theater can foster creative, interpretive, and aesthetic engagement with language, as well as the development of empathy and identity. This session invites presentations on various approaches to using theater at all levels of the undergraduate German curriculum. Particularly welcome are approaches that promote the development of multiple literacies, critical thinking, and social learning.
