Six ladies from the Kansas City area birded Squaw Creek NWR today. Big numbers of waterfowl although not a lot of variety. Northern Pintails estimated at 41,000 by refuge staff. They were literally in big numbers in every pool. Also big numbers of American Coots. Shorebird species included Killdeer, Greater Yellowlegs and Wilson's Snipe. Sparrow species included fox, swamp, song, white-throated and white-crowned. Nice looks at non-breeding male and female Rusty Blackbirds. Several Bald Eagles and Northern Harriers. Bird of the day was a Merlin- great looks perched and in flight. 11 Sandhill Cranes were also seen. No Snow Geese or GreaterWhite-fronted Geese.
