Critical Theory and Nature
American Comparative Literature Association Annual Conference
Harvard University, Cambridge, Massachusetts, March 17-March 20, 2016
Over the past decade, discourses encompassing Post-Humanism, animal ethics, environmental humanities and post-humanism have focuses renewed attention on writings about nature and animals.
Nature plays a prominent yet under-examined role in Critical Theory. Steve Vogel's 1996 Against Nature: The Concept of Nature in Critical Theory explores the relationship. Since then, many developments have taken place in each field and the intersection of the two.
This proposed seminar and related volume seeks to remedy this lacuna in scholarship by exploring nature and of animals in the Frankfurt School.
Both the seminar and the volume intend to offer new angles on the Frankfurt School and, inversely, into environmental philosophy.
Possible paper topics might include but are not limited to the following:
- critical theory and nature
- natural history
- natural beauty
- second nature
Please submit a paper proposal at the ACLA web-site. (250-500 word abstract.)
According to ACLA guidelines, papers can be submitted between Sept. 1 and Sept. 23, 2015.
Please note, as per ACLA web-site, submission to the seminar does not guarantee acceptance. The ACLA program committee will review the seminar during the month of October and notify organizers of acceptance or rejection by November 15, 2015.
An edited volume on Critical Theory and Nature that dovetails with the seminar dovetails will aim to fill this gap in scholarship. If you are interested in being considered for the edited volume, please send an additional 500 word abstract for the volume and a cv to Christina Gerhardt at [log in to unmask] by September 15, 2015. Those who submitted abstracts for the volume by the deadline will be notified of a decision by October 15, 2015. (Details around article - word count and format - will be provided then.) Articles will be due by January 31, 2016.
