metrical trade skill are mysteriously touching for an obligatory strophe.

Yes. The formulae came into existence to provide the singer of tales with
line fillers; by the very end, however, it seems clear the poet _could_ have
composed the line without the 'aid' of a formula. It is there by intent and
is achingly beautiful.
