Call for Papers

WORLDS and WORDS
29th Annual Interdisciplinary Conference in the Humanities
Sponsored by the Department of Foreign Languages and Literatures
University of West Georgia, College of Arts and Humanities
Carrollton, Georgia
October 30-November 1, 2014

We welcome submissions from across the Humanities, Fine Arts, and the Social and Natural
Sciences dealing with worlds and words in all their many forms. Papers, performances, exhibits,
and screenings may be submitted by scholars, writers, artists, and performers and may be in
English, French, German, or Spanish. Conference participants will be encouraged to expand and
revise (and translate into English) their papers for submission to the peer-reviewed JAISA: The
Journal of the Association for the Interdisciplinary Study of the Arts.

Suggested topics include but are not limited to Worlds and Words in relation to:
• literary studies, including all periods and genres
• ecocriticism and environmental studies
• the visual arts, including film studies, photography and graphic design
• feminist, queer and postcolonial approaches
• geocriticism; geopoetics
• public intellectualism
• ecologies and geographies of the written word
• collaboration between the Humanities and the Sciences
• linguistics and anthropology
• theatre, scenes and landscapes
• philosophy
• history and historical revisions
• music, including musical history and theory

Keynote speakers: Marine biologist James McClintock and poet Adam Vines, both from the
University of Alabama at Birmingham, will deliver this year's keynote address. McClintock is a
world-renowned scientist and activist who works primarily with Antarctica. Vines assisted him
in editing his last book Last Antarctica (2012 Macmillan) and traveled there with him last fall.
They will speak about the ways in which art and science can combine to form powerful social
and political tools.

For individual proposals please submit a one-page, double-spaced abstract in English, French,
German, or Spanish via email to Dr. Betsy Dahms, [log in to unmask] Include
the presenter’s name, institution, email address, phone number, and any audio-visual or technical
requirements for the presentation. Submissions for panels of 3-4 presenters are especially
welcome. For panel proposals please submit the panel title, abstracts, and contact information
for all speakers and for the panel moderator. Proposals are due by July 1, 2014. Visit
