Heaney's poem seems so much less substantial than the poem by Thomas. If there were not the long introduction, filled with the worship language, would Heaney's poem be worth reading? How long will it last? A century--I laugh. How eagerly do the latest contemporary poets and critics always want a great poet in their own age.
