Well, in the midst of all your earthly strife, if your gaze is turned upwards, that's a prayer too. An awareness of what you are, and of what you are not, is a veritable basis of prayer.

"Branches of wistaria
Circumscribe a golden grin"
"The nightingales are singing near       
The Convent of the Sacred Heart ..."

Poetry, if you like, is the ground of Eliot's beseeching.
