Great stuff, this goes a long way toward addressing the questions a few of us raised just a couple days ago.

Colleagues,

The International Consortium of Investigative Journalists has released today an interactive database that reveals the networks around more than 100,000 secret companies, trusts and funds across 10 offshore jurisdictions, including the British Virgin Islands, the Cook Islands and Singapore.

The Offshore Leaks web app allows readers to explore the relationships between clients, offshore entities and the lawyers, accountants, banks and other intermediaries who help keep these arrangements secret. The web app displays graphic visualizations of offshore entities and the people connected to them including, when possible, the company’s true owners.

The information is a portion of the 2.5 million leaked files ICIJ analyzed with 112 journalists and more than 40 media organizations in 58 countries. It is not a data dump but a careful selection of information that can bring transparency and accountability to the historically impenetrable world of tax havens. We publish this information in the public interest and have withheld a great deal of personal data.

We also hope the information will  be widely used by journalists all over the world, particularly in countries most affected by corruption and backroom deals. ICIJ will continue to partner with as many journalists as possible to produce stories based on the files. Since our first stories were published in April, we have created 30 new partnerships with reporters.

The Offshore Leaks web app was developed by La Nación newspaper in Costa Rica for ICIJ, with contributions from journalists and programmers in the UK, the US and Spain.

This post answers some questions we anticipate from the public.  Here’s a story about how the database was built.

Please contact us if you have questions and bear with us if we take a little while to respond. We anticipate some busy days ahead.

Thank you!
Marina
