I believe that Short-eared Owls are often active on cloudy days if they are hungry enough. After all some of these birds are probably from the land of the midnight sun and if they did not hunt in the day light they would not eat in the summer. I suspect that the comment about Northern Harriers is correct. At dusk when they sometimes fly together, I have seen Harriers harass them.

That is a possibility. I'll try a little earlier today. I've noticed the Barred Owls seem to be out in the daytime also, but maybe that is not unusual.

I wonder if they come out earlier if there are fewer Northern Harriers about. I've often watched the owls come out right after the harriers roost.

Ron & I went seeking Short-eared Owls last evening a little before 5:00. At 5:07 at the corner of Cemetery Rd. and Lumpee Ave. we found one. In reference with Pat Lueders report, perhaps we should have started earlier. They are such mystical and beautiful creatures.
