CFP: Incorporating Early German-Language Womenís Texts in the Classroom

Although a broad spectrum of pre-20th century texts by German-language women is available for use in the classroom setting, often instructors fail to use them because they donít know how to integrate them into classwork. The purpose of this panel is to examine ways in which early womenís writing can be incorporated into classes, and how it can be taught from a contemporary feminist perspective.

Papers could discuss an entire course, a unit, or one text, and could focus on topics such as:

∑         Student reactions to early womenís texts

∑         Challenges in incorporating early womenís writings

∑         Specific teaching strategies

∑         Text selection

∑         Excerpting longer texts

∑         Associated writing assignments

∑         Meaningful classroom tasks

∑         Creating social/historical context to draw student interest

∑         Using film adaptations of early work

∑         Developing glossaries

∑         Dealing with archaic language

∑         Discussing early texts from a contemporary feminist viewpoint: How are we to read these texts?

∑         Approaches to the question: What do these early texts bring to us today? How do we make them relevant for students?
