We returned from northern Michigan just this week.  Near Wilderness State Park, near Mackinaw City, we were amazed to see 18 apparently wild mute swans in an inlet of Lake Michigan.  The following day, as we were about to exit the Mackinaw Bridge to St. Ignace in the Upper Peninsula, we saw a flock of about two dozen mute swans, also on Lake Michigan.  The iBirds program that I studied on the trip north had mentioned that mute swans were breeding in the wild in the region, but seeing so many wild and all together was still a jaw-dropping experience.

I remember seeing lots of Mute Swans in a river between Luxembourg and Germany (don't remember the name of the river, and I'm too lazy to look it up), so that felt more like "wild".

Just returned from a trip to northern England and in a nature preserve there I saw scores of mute swans.  I know here they ar thought of as "park birds" or escapees.  Does anyone know is it the same over there or are they more "wild" than here?
