At Horseshoe Lake C.A. near Olive Branch, Illinois, March 6, 2012: 2 double-crested cormorants on the north side of the bike trail causeway. This is about a month early, according to Bohlen’s “Annotated Check-List,” but I’m not aware if they’ve been returning earlier in more recent years. The eagle nest on the entry road out of Olive Branch is active, also, with both adults on the nest this afternoon. Areas of the county near the Mississippi bridge showed storm damage, and fields that had been wet, now dry, were thick with dust devils and blowing topsoil, with quite poor visibility on the roads at times.
