That sounds familiar.  As I recall, MoBot has some exotic bird species in the Climatron and there were placards with pictures and names.  If you weren't in the Climatron, maybe one escaped out the double doors.

I took this photo this past summer at Missouri Botanical Gardens in St. Louis.

 Can anyone ID this bird? So far, it has stumped a whole lot of people. One of the better fits is a silver beaked tanager that is a long way from home.
