Thomas Mann, Franz Kafka, and the Novella Year 1912: 100 Years of “Death” and “Judgment”-01/20-GSA 10/4-7/2012

for a session to be held at the annual conference of the
German Studies Association, Milwaukee, 4-7 October 2012

Self-evaluations by authors of two novellas could hardly be more similar in import and more different in metaphorical register than Franz Kafka’s description of “Das Urteil” (“… die Geschichte ist wie eine regelrechte Geburt mit Schmutz und Schleim bedeckt aus mir herausgekommen”) and Thomas Mann’s description of “Der Tod in Venedig” ("Es stimmt einmal Alles, es schießt zusammen, und der Kristall ist rein”). The panel solicits papers on the subsequent reception(s) of either “Das Urteil” (September 22-23, 1912/Arkadia, 1913) or “Der Tod in Venedig” (1911-1912/Neue Rundschau, November 1912) or both, and seeks to articulate the significance of the Novella Year 1912 for the history of the genre.
