Framing Faith: Muslim Belief and Belonging in Contemporary Visual Culture and Performance
GSA, Milwaukee, WI, Oct. 4-7, 2012

A number of visible symbols of the practice of faith are ever present in German media and film: mosques, Islamic dress, and prayer, for example. Yet, cultural studies critiques of these images, while appropriately pointing out their racialization and politicization, rarely investigate such images as figuring practices and performances of faith. This panel seeks to look beyond the veil in order to engage a more nuanced examination of the ways in which Islam is visualized in contemporary film, television, and popular culture. We ask how not only forms of Muslim religious belonging, but more specifically faith and belief, are imagined in literal and figurative forms and what these representations communicate to contemporary audiences. How do television shows such as Türkisch für Anfänger or Tatort mediate embodiments of Muslim belonging in connection with issues of assimilation, segregation, multiculturalism, and cultural literacy? How is Islam visually represented, yet verbally unarticulated in recent films such as Kebab Connection (Anno Saul, 2004), Gegen die Wand (Fatih Akin, 2004), Fremde Haut (Angelina Maccarone, 2005), or Die Fremde (Feo Aldag, 2010)? What are the racialized and gendered stakes of analyzing such representations in relationship to experiences of faith? We are also interested in contributions that examine dimensions of culture and performance beyond television and film, such as theater, advertising, webpages, internet videos, and other popular media.
