Larry is correct. The guideline is to use the common name first in your
posts, and thereafter abbreviations may be used. The same applies to
scientific names. As the subject line always comes first, it should
always use the common name.

The intent is to put clear communication and accessibility to all levels
of birders and enthusiasts first.

I believe that when posting to MOBIRDS-L or other similar sites that the
recommended procedure is to mention the full common name of the bird in
the subject line and thereafter it is acceptable to use the acronym in
the body of the message.
