Some things birds do baffle me. This year,
gazillions of Robins stayed north -- not only in Missouri, but also in Iowa
and Oklahoma, according to their listserves. Marge's flight of blackbirds
indicates that they have stayed north, too, at least where she is. Yet the
Morning Doves, which have been everywhere in my region for quite a few years,
have suddenly disappeared. I have not seen one since November. Why? There is
plenty of food for them at feeders.

blackbirds" that we sometimes observe in winter near Columbia. When in
our area, they roost in or near Eagle Bluffs, fly out to feed in the morning,
then back near sunset. I've watched them at the end of the Columbia CBC
day (not this year) and it looks like a river, with tributaries joining from
right and left now and then as the river wends its way southwest toward the
Missouri River. Great stuff!

just in awe of what I just observed. As I was taking another helping of
birdseed out to the feeders a few minutes ago, a huge flock of blackbirds
began streaming over our house. I stood there for a good 5 minutes and
watched as they continued. I am not good at estimating, but on our CBC
Dec 29, one group reported 100,000 blackbird species. I was frankly a
bit skeptical, but I am now certain that these may be the same birds. It
looked like bats coming out of Bracken Cave. Sometimes the group would
swell and then sometimes thin out, but it was seemingly never-ending.
Actually, I stopped watching because I was getting cold, and the stream
shifted to the west out of my sight. The birds were flying from south to
north.
