Jennifer, in Neosho, and MO Birders -

Red-shouldered Hawk prey items are
voles, field mice, and chipmunks. In season
they like frogs, toads, snakes, crayfish and
insects too, especially grasshoppers.
BNA on line account.

So, sounds like your Mallards are reasonably
safe as far as Red-shouldered's are concerned.

This hawk is a very common hawk residentially
and suburbia here in southwest MO. Just 20
years ago they were only regular along our streams.
So they have made great strides locally in that time.
Personal observation.

Good birding, Larry Herbert, Joplin, Jasper Co., MO.
