Lynne and Gary,
Yellow-bellied Sapsuckers drill those 
horizontal holes
that show up so well in the third photo.  We 
have a 
pair of sapsuckers wintering in our 
neighborhood.  
They are very fond of the persimmons that are 
still
on the tree.
