In cooperation with the National Audubon Society’s 111th Christmas Bird count, the Midland Empire Audubon Society will hold their count on Saturday, December 18.
The purpose of the count, which is done across the entire country during a two-week period near Christmas, is to provide data to the National Audubon Society on the status of the country’s bird populations. Check www.audubon.org/bird/cbc/index.html for more information on this nationwide event.
The Midland Empire count is open to all, and anyone who would like to participate in this fun and worthwhile event is welcome to join in. The count area is a 15 mile diameter circle with the center point being the flagpole at the main entrance at Krug Park.
Anyone wanting to participate can contact Larry Lade, compiler for the count, at 816-232-6125. In addition to those who will canvass the woods and fields of the area, persons are needed to monitor their home bird feeders, which will also help out in the total count.
A organizational meeting will be held at the home of Larry and Brenda Lade at 2823 Sacramento in St. Joseph at 7 PM on Thursday, December 16. The purpose of the meeting is to assign areas of count responsibility, and to coordinate the various groups who will be participating. Before the meeting about the bird count there will be a short board of directors meeting of the Midland Empire Audubon Society.
Those who wish to participate, but cannot attend the meeting are asked to contact the compiler, Larry Lade at the above phone number, before the meeting.
