If you get a chance some fall go to Vera Cruz, Mexico and go on a hawk watch. Most of the 26 species recorded were hawks and eagles, but many were vultures, storks, anhingas, ibises, cormorants pelicans, etc, all the big birds that ride hot air thermals and do what is called dynamic soaring migrate. They don't do the trans gulf migration because there are almost no thermals over water. Depending on the time you are there from August through December something is migrating in the 10 km gap between the Sierra Madre Oriental and the coast of the Gulf of Mexico. One October when I was there we say 650,000 migrant birds rising on thermals that looked like black tornados from the 5K plus birds in each group. At one time there were five such tornados visible from the observation deck. Huge numbers of vultures were passing by but Broad-wings were the most abundant at 350,000 on that day.

And it happens every year. This is one of the NA wildlife spectaculars just like the sandhill cranes in NE. There are buses operated by the local folks that will take you from the city to the observation towers. TV are found all the way to Tierra del Fuego on the tip of the southern cone of South America.

Wow, I didn't realize that TV get down to Venezuela! I assumed that were more regional since I see them almost year round.

Apparently these are NW US birds that were tagged in Venezuela in 2006-2007 and 2008-2009 in a study by Hawk Mountain folks to determine migratory patterns. You can see details of report requested at the site below.

Today at Eagle Bluffs, we saw a Turkey Vulture with a red wing tag, #198 in white letters. I need information on where to report this.

Also saw 2 Scissor-tailed Flycatchers,
and 1 Cattle Egret hanging out with the Great Egrets.
