TOPIC: Jews and/or Jewish Austrians in Modern Austrian Literature and Culture
DESCRIPTION: The contributions of Jewish Austrians to Modern Austrian Literature and Culture have been most significant throughout the nineteenth and twentieth centuries and continue to thrive after the Shoah and into the twenty-first century. This conference will seek to answer some of the following questions within this vast topic or address some of the topics and questions outlined below, and we welcome papers that address other issues of Jews and/or Jewish Austrian in Modern Austrian Literature as well. Interdisciplinary approaches to literature as well as submissions from colleagues in related fields are welcome.
POSSIBLE PAPER and PANEL TOPICS include, but not limited to:
-Anti-Semitism and Zionism in Austria.
-Jewish Galician and Bukovina writers
-Jewish Austrian Holocaust survivor narratives
-Depictions of Jewish Austrians by non-Jewish Austrians.
-How have Jewish Austrian writers and essayists influenced Austrian Politics?
-How do Jewish Austrian writings differ from Jewish German texts?
-Authors: Schnitzler, Freud, J. Roth, Kafka, Celan, Aichinger, Torberg, H. Spiel, Schindel, Menasse Rabinovici, and many others.
