1/3/10: Howell Island (Lat 38.65, Long 90.57; 512 ' elev), slightly overcast, 8 AM,
8F, WC -4 to -8 F. Grussy is pecking at the frozen ground, without much success,
in the middle of the field. Will need extra effort today and the rest of the frozen
predicted week. Hang in there little one, and be strong enough to wing to warmth.

RMS- still large numbers of Trumpeters (maybe 250-300 or more) and Canadas in
Ellis Bay; seems to be large nos of common mergansers also, probably other duck
species but I don't have a field scope; about 15-20 bald eagles seen; 3 N Harriers
and 4 kestrels; could not find the Glaucous gull at Maple Isl access or at the Dam
and Locks museum area; wasn't sure where to find the generator area. Large
chunks of ice are present in the Mississippi. Not much happening on the
Confluence roadside (30-40 Longspurs at various places); no pipits.
