Transcultural Discourses and Interwar German Visual Culture

Valerie A. Weinstein, Associate Professor of German, University of Nevada, Reno
Brett M. Van Hoesen, Assistant Professor of Art History, University of Nevada, Reno

Please submit abstracts for paper proposals (250 words)
Deadline: January 29, 2010

Working from an interdisciplinary standpoint of Film Studies and Art
History, we are soliciting case studies (from colleagues in all disciplines)
to examine the diverse ways in which visual cultures in the German interwar
period (1918 - 1939) transacted concepts of cultural, racial, and
geographical difference. Are there prevailing paradigms throughout the
interwar period that might otherwise be missed by traditional modes of
periodization based upon political regime change? What role do visual
cultures play in articulating these ideological frameworks? How does
consideration of Germany's "interwar period" enable different kinds of
comparative, cross-cultural studies? Which methodological or theoretical
models and terminologies help us to approach these discourses most

Please send abstracts of 250 words or less via e-mail to Valerie Weinstein
([log in to unmask]) and Brett Van Hoesen ([log in to unmask]) by Friday, January
29, 2010.

You will be notified of selection results by Saturday, February 6, 2010. If
selected, please plan to submit written confirmation, a short narrative
biography, full contact information, and technology needs by Thursday,
February 11, 2010. All presenters must be current GSA members.
