If I thought heaven had the Current River running through it, I'd be trying harder to get in.

Thanks for sharing, Mike.  Even a vicarious trip to the Current is a day maker!

Krista and I left Rolla at 7am on a cold frosty Sunday morning heading for Shannon County, we arrived at Rocky Falls at 9:45 am; the recent rains had swollen Rocky Creek and the falls were just magnificent. From there we drove down to Leipzig Mill and birded more of the Rocky Creek area including both the shut ins and the old homestead and it's wide open fields surrounded by a mixed forest of oak, hickory and pine. The colors were awesome.

From here we traveled to Blue Springs below Owl's Bend on the Current River, there is a natural area here and the scenery took you breath away but the birding was so-so.

We then traveled over to Alley Springs (picnic lunch), again the birds were not to be seen or heard, especially sparrows which we looked for as we walked along the spring branch birding the high grass.

We then drove to Round Springs with a stop at the Short Leaf Virgin Pine Stand (Pioneer Forest) where we birded both locations before driving to Pull Tight Springs and camp grounds, (National Forest). As beautiful as it was there were not many birds around and believe me we looked.

There are few things more beautiful than the Ozarks in the fall, with the bright sun overhead and the reflections of the sweet gun and hickory off the aqua blue spring water on a cool autumn day. There were times when I would just stand there in the forest along the river and absorb the energy of the sun while listing to the far away chatter of the Blue Jay. Birding, what a magnificent way to spend a day.

The only CACHE posting was Rocky Creek CA, all the other areas are not listed and are federal properties along the Ozark Scenic Riverways.
