The St. Louis Audubon Carlyle Pelagic Trip is coming up on Saturday,
September 20, 2008. Sabine's Gull is seen almost every year on this
trip and there is a chance at more extreme pelagic rarities such as
jaegers and Red Phalarope. Land-birding is excellent with great
diversity of warblers, vireos and other migrant passerines. We will
meet at the McDonald's in Carlyle, near the intersection of route 50 and
route 127 at 6:30 am. The boat ride begins at the Carlyle West Access
Marina. You must be there prior to 10:45 am for the boat ride. There
is a fee of $25 associated with this trip to cover the boat rental and
gas. All are welcome on this trip, but space is limited. Please
contact Joe Eades by e-mail at joseph.w.eades@monsanto .com to reserve
space for the boat trip. Bring water, snacks, sunscreen, a hat and bulk
popcorn to lure in the gulls.
Car-pooling is an option. The meeting place for car-pooling is the
Cracker Barrel parking lot just off I-64 at the highway 157 exit. For
those car-poolers who are interested in a full day of birding, meet at
the Cracker Barrel parking lot at 5:15 am. For those who are interested
in the boat ride only, meet at the Cracker Barrel parking lot at 9:30
am. It will be important to car-pool with those who have similar plans
for the day. Some will want to leave after the boat trip (2:30 pm),
some may stay for a couple more hours of land-birding and some may want
to stay until dusk. The "lakewatch" from the Hazlet Pavilion can be
very productive until just before sunset.

Trip Leader: Joe Eades
