When the volunteers were up at BK Leach Saturday evening for the final rail survey, we were told the staff at the conservation area is pulling the motors from the pumps and preparing for the area (including Kings Lake and Bittern Basin) to flood in the coming week. They said the levees are saturated from weeks of rains and they have already started to seep. They expect the floooding will kill off all of the native plants in the wetlands and grasslands and negate a lot of the time and money put into developing the area. They also expect most of the nesting marsh birds to lose their broods.
