Goethe's Wahlverwandtschaften at 200 (Panel sponsored by Goethe

ASECS Annual Meeting, Richmond, VA, March 27-30, 2009

In view of the 200th anniversary of the first publication of the
Wahlverwandtschaften, papers are sought that address any aspect of
Goethe's novel and its long afterlife. Potential topics might include:
translations of the Wahlverwandtschaften; its status in 19th- and
20th-century literary histories and genealogies in Germany and abroad;
its impact on aesthetics and the visual arts; theatrical performances;
film adaptations; 'affinity' as a model of intertextuality; the
novel's relationship to the sciences; and its uses as a rhetorical
tool in debates about marriage and adultery. Please send 1-page
