About two weeks ago, on our way home from Eagle Bluffs, we saw thousands of
Red-winged BB, plus a few Rustys and Grackles, feeding in the fields just
South of the Champion Burr Oak. They were right next to the road, but
stretched out for acres. We pulled into the turn-off next to one of the
water pumps just off the main road and watched them...we were surrounded.
Several raptors would fly by, land nearby, disturbing the flock a bit, but
not much. The raptors seemed as amazed as we were. I guess there is
something to the adages, "safety in numbers," or "birds of a feather..."
We've never seen anything quite like it.
