I went to Smithville Lake late tis afternoon to observe what I thought would
be a gull roost. The lake is half rozen, and the other half was covered
with tens of thousands of Snow Geese and quite a few Canadas. Searching for
other species was somwhat difficult, but I did tick the following:

1 Great Blue Heron
1 Pied-billed Grebe
4 Double-crested Cormorants
Beaucoup de Snow Geese
2 Ross' Geese
Beaucoup de Canada Geese
At least 2 Cackling Geese
1 Green-winged Teal
>100 Common Mergansers
1 HoodedMerganser
>10 Mallards
>25 Lesser Scaup
2 Ring-necked Ducks
>10 Am. Goldeneye
1 flock of Coots
1 imm. Bald Eagle (It does not appear that Eagle Day will be very
productive at Smithville Lake).
>15 Ring-billed Gulls (There were probably Herrings there, but they were far
>out and not organized for comparison).
