CFP: East European Contexts, Transnational Memory, Transcultural Literature (proposed GSA panel)
We are seeking papers that discuss contemporary “Eastern European” German writers and their contributions to German culture and to an “Europeanization” of cultural memory. First-generation immigrant writers such as Herta Müller and Richard Wagner have successfully incorporated the memory of Romanian communism into German culture by exposing the scrutiny and transgressions of the infamous secret police in numerous award-winning texts. Zsuzsa Bánk, a second-generation immigrant writer, addresses important historical moments (Hungary 1956 and Prague 1968) as she exposes the austerity of life under communism in Hungary. Papers that deal with East European contexts (World War II, 1956, 1968, 1989) in German-language texts are especially welcome.
