It gives us a great deal of pleasure to announce the competition for the 2008 DAAD BOOK PRIZE OF THE GERMAN STUDIES ASSOCIATION.

This extremely prestigious prize is funded through the North American office of the German Academic Exchange Service (DAAD) and carries an award of $1,000.   This year the prize will be awarded for books in the fields of German language, literature, and cultural studies. All books published in these fields during 2006 and 2007 are eligible for consideration.

Under the provision of the DAAD grant, eligibility is restricted to authors who are citizens or permanent residents of the United States and Canada.  Translations, editions, anthologies, memoirs, and books that have been previously published are not eligible.

The prize is awarded under German Studies Association rules by a GSA committee, and is presented during the banquet of the GSA Annual Conference, which this year will take place in St. Paul, Minnesota, from October 2 to 5.

We very much hope that you will nominate a recent title or titles from your list for consideration by this year's GSA Book Prize Committee.  If you do so, please send one copy of each title (i.e., three copies in all) BY FEBRUARY 15 to EACH of the members of the Committee, whose names and addresses are shown below.   Should you have any questions, please feel free to contact me ([log in to unmask]) or the chair of the Book Prize Committee, Professor Randall Halle ([log in to unmask]).

Many thanks for your willingness to help us honor and to publicize the most distinguished published work in our field, and in a context where it will get a great deal of positive attention.
