Doug Willis asked me to post some of the highlights of his Christmas
Day birding adventures...

** Pony Express Lake CA (DeKalb Co.):

TRUMPETER SWAN - 7 (unbanded) in the restored wetland area below Pony
Express Lake

PINE SISKIN - 3 in pines near the entrance (on Lakesite Rd.)

NORTHERN SHRIKE - 1, observed on the corn stalks about 50 feet WSW of
a parking lot near a maintenance shed on Maple Rd. (the road that
bisects the CA from north to south)

COMMON REDPOLL - 3, maybe 4, observed from a hilltop about 150 yards
SW of the same parking lot referenced in the Northern Shrike location.
They were feeding in a field of sunflowers, weedy forbs, and corn
stubble along with 500+ American Goldfinches, 100+ American Tree
Sparrows, and 100+ meadowlark sp.

Doug returned later in the day and the Northern Shrike was still
present; he looked for about 30 minutes but did not relocate the
redpolls on his second visit.

** Hwy H, 0.3 miles west of the small town of Berlin (Gentry Co.):

SNOW BUNTING - 28 observed from Hwy H in a hilltop field of bare
ground and corn stubble; in a mixed flock of Horned Larks and a few
Lapland Longspurs

** Elam Bend CA (Gentry Co.):

N. MOCKINGBIRD - 1
EASTERN BLUEBIRD - 1
SPOTTED TOWHEE - 1
Loggerhead Shrike - 2

Warning -- Dirt roads in the area were extremely muddy ("soupy") and
difficult to navigate.
