I was birding Lake Jacomo in Jackson County near Kansas City, MO. I was watching a mixed flock of Gadwall and Mallards when they startled. I then saw a Red-Tailed Hawk in the water holding a male Gadwall under water for no more than 15-20 seconds. I am confident of the identification of both birds. The Red-tailed flew away when the male Gadwall escaped (or was released). The Gadwall swam away feathers ruffled but w/o any apparent injury. Thats one "Lucky Duck". Has anyone seen this kind of behavior before?
