Birds observed at MSSU wetland this AM
for one hour.  55 F.  partly cloudy, little wind.
Joplin, Jasper County:

Red-shouldered Hawk  1
American Kestrel  1
Killdeer  1
Belted Kingfisher  1
Red-bellied Woodpecker  1
Downy Woodpecker  1
Northern Flicker (ys)  1
Blue Jay  4
American Crow  4
Carolina Chickadee  1
Tufted Titmouse  1
White-breasted Nuthatch  1
Carolina Wren  1
European Starling  10
Song Sparrow  5
Swamp Sparrow  4
Dark-eyed Junco  15
Northern Cardinal  7
House Finch  5
American Goldfinch  10

20 species.  

For a research project some 40 years ago,
I did a study of Dark-eyed Junco groups during
the early winter.  Numbers ranged from
5 to 55 and the mean was 27. (N = about 30).
During the ice on Dec. 19, in our yard and the
neighbors I counted 27 at one time!
Now there's trivia for you.
