There is one point that the other posters have left out concerning
membership in a local chapter if you have joined National Audubon.

Once you join National Audubon they assign you to a chapter based on your
zip code. National then supplies (sells, actually) mailing addresses to
chapters for newsletters, etc. If you live out of the zip code area that is
assigned to any chapter then you are not assigned to any chapter. If you
do want to be a member of a chapter, receive the newsletter, hear about
meetings, etc., there is a remedy. You can petition National to have your
name added to a particular chapter's address list. Sometimes it works
although it can take a long time and repeated efforts. Alternatively, the
chapter can petition National to expand its zip code boundaries. St. Louis
Audubon recently did this and we picked up about 500 'new' members in MO and
IL.
