This morning Bill Clark and I counted 55 Canada Geese at Eagle Bluffs CA (Boone Co.). All were in the air, by-passing the area with many waterfowl hunters present. Between 1 and 2 p.m., I counted 1,092 Canada Geese at Twin Lakes, a Columbia city park, where no hunting is allowed. Who came up with the "silly as a goose" adage? A cherry bomb was set off at 1:55 p.m. with the intended effect of scaring the geese out of the enclosed swimming lake area (to which they retreat to escape the dogs running loose in the park and, unfortunately, defecate on and eat the delicious fescue planted there). 400 geese rose out of the enclosure to join the nearly 700 on the big lake. The ones on the big lake didn't even increase their honking. All settled in and were back to normal within 5 minutes, although they stayed out of the enclosure for at least that long. Many on the big lake seemed to enjoy the game of slowly waddling along the ice toward open water, luring the two dogs pursuing them toward the water. Frantic, yelling owner finally got dogs' attention and they returned to shore, thus avoiding yet another taxpayer-funded canine rescue by Columbia Fire Department. Great day in the park!
