Scott asked what magazines folks subscribe to and/or recommend. See
below--comments welcome.

It depends on several things--the intensity of your interest may be
the primary factor. Many birders (most?) subscribe to more than one.

For general interest in birding, some info on where to go and some on
bird i.d., both "Birder's World" and "Birder's Digest" are very
good. (If you want to take only one, find a friend with similar
interests to subscribe to the other and trade when you've read an
issue).

If you are or think you might be getting kinda serious about this
birding stuff, join the American Birding Association (ABA). Your
membership brings you "Birding" and "Winging It." The former is full
of bird i.d. information, the latter features "where to" articles;
both have much, much more of interest to birders.

If you are a Missouri birder who wishes to know where to bird in
Missouri, how to know what you are likely to see, and how to i.d.
what you see; if you read and/or post to Mobirds, use the Missouri
Annotated Checklist, report or read reports of rare birds in the
state, are looking for others to share your birding, you should join
the Audubon Society of Missouri, the state birding organization (and
Missouri's oldest conservation organization). Your $15 membership
brings you many good things (spring and fall meetings, special
birding days, for example) and the quarterly, "The Bluebird."

The Bluebird carries the seasonal reports (what was seen where in the
state) and other birding information.
