reminds me of a line from Antoine Blondin's  novel "Un Singe en Hiver" (French film b/w classic, 1962, starring Jean Gabin and Jean-Paul Belmondo):

"Je me suis habitué à vivre au seuil de moi-mème puisqu'à l'intérieur il fait trop sombre."
(I have gotten used to living on the threshold of myself since in the inside it is too dark.)
