Title: The Voice of the "Other" in Film
Session Organizer: Daniel Gilfillan, Arizona State University, [log in to unmask]
Abstract: Strangeness, the exotic, difference, foreignness, alien - each of these are terms that denote otherness, and reflect encounters that assume either repulsion or attraction. German film history provides numerous examples of how the medium of film gives voice to "others" by revealing both outsider and insider views of what it means to be other, or be cast as other. Issues of race, ethnicity, sexual orientation, and national or political status are explored in films as diverse as Fatih Akin's Gegen die Wand (2004), Leontine Sagan's Mädchen in Uniform (1931), Barbara Albert's Nordrand (1999), Max Färberböck's Aimée & Jaguar (1999) and Florian Henckel von Donnersmarck's Das Leben der Anderen (2006), to name just a few. This session invites papers that critically analyze how German and Austrian film frames encounters of otherness.

Please send 250 word abstracts and a one paragraph bio as an email-attachment (MS Word) to: Daniel Gilfillan ([log in to unmask]) referencing "AATG 2008 proposal" in your subject line. Session languages are English and German. Proposal deadline is December 21, 2007.

This is a planned session of the AATG. Further information about this and other sessions can be found at: http://www.aatg.org/content/view/56/34/
