Encountering Disability in German Culture
AATG Panel, Orlando, Nov 21-23rd, 2008
Although long a mainstay in other fields, disability rarely appears as a theme in German language curricula. In the wake of Carol Poore’s 2007 monograph Disability in Twentieth Century German Culture, this session aims to introduce and explore teaching strategies and materials for addressing disability in German literature and culture. The presentations will discuss pedagogical approaches to and courses and lesson plans on German cultural texts (including but not limited to literature, film, art, television, websites, and music) that directly thematize mental or physical disability. Abstracts based on all levels of German, from beginning and intermediate language to upper level literature and culture courses, are welcome. Email abstracts (250 words maximum) to Morgan Koerner by December 21st, 2007. [log in to unmask]
