Call for Papers
The Research Centre for German & Austrian Exile Studies at the Institute of Germanic & Romance Studies invites contributions for a conference from 17 to 19 September 2008, marking the 70th anniversary of the Munich Agreement in 1938 and the 60th anniversary of the establishment of the Communist government in 1948 on the subject of exile in and from Czechoslovakia during the 1930s and 1940s.
Papers on exile following the Prague Spring 1968 will also be considered, as will German-speaking exile from other former Hapsburg lands.
Suggested topic areas include:
Aspects of German-speaking exile in Czechoslovakia prior to 1939 (political, cultural etc)
Czech Refugee Trust Fund in Czechoslovakia
Czech Refugee Trust Fund in Britain
The British response to the Czech plight of 1938
Czech refugee organisations in Britain
Czech government in exile
Relations between Czech refugee groups in Britain and other exile groups
Post war remigration to Czechoslovakia
Exiled representatives of Czech culture in Britain e.g., writers, painters, musiciansŠ

Conference languages: English and German
It is planned to publish the papers in the Yearbook of the Centre in 2009.
